Learning to swim is a fundamental requirement if you live in Gisborne. We are surrounded by beautiful beaches and rivers and to make the most of these natural resources, we must be able to swim. Every child at Kaiti learns how to swim. We are part of the Swim 4 Life Programme, partnering with Swim Tairawhiti and Comet Swimming Club. In term 1, every child participates in swimming lessons with professional coaches from Comet. Learning to swim takes lots of practice. At Kaiti we recognise this and have committed to swimming as being part of our annual sports programme. We have noticed that many of the new students who enrol at Year 2 and older have not had any swimming instruction at their previous school and lack water confidence. These students receive 1:1 swimming instruction in small groups to build their water confidence. We also have a Swimming academy in the school led by Koka Rose. Every week before and after school our elite swimmers train together. There are now over 35 students involved in this academy. This programme is funded by Kaiti School.
